Professor Robin Callender Smith is available for appointment or nomination as a single Arbitrator or as an Arbitrator within a Panel for UK and International institutional or ad hoc arbitrations as well as other methods of Alternative Dispute Resolution.

He has over 10 years of judicial experience of reasoned decision-making, particularly in the Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) sector, and is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (MCIArb). From his former work, other sectors of his practical and expert experience are:

  • Consumer energy regulation: independent member of the UK regulator Ofgem’s Enforcement Decisions Panel
  • Data protection and Environmental information: Information Rights Tribunal Judge, dealing with appeals from the decisions of the Information Commissioner in England & Wales
  • Disciplinary matters: legal Chair of the Mayor of London’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) where, after mandatory security clearance, he concluded high-level professional disciplinary hearings and sanctions in respect of police officers of all ranks.
  • Financial services regulation and the application of professional standards expected of FCA-authorised key corporate individuals: for nine years he was a member, and then Deputy Chair, of the Regulatory Decisions Committee (RDC) of the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)
  • Freedom of information issues: Information Rights Tribunal Judge, dealing with appeals from the decisions of the Information Commissioner in England & Wales
  • Higher education: involved in higher education for over 10 years.
  • Human rights issues relating to fair trial and open justice, privacy and freedom of expression and speech: former journalist, a national tabloid media lawyer for over 40 years, a former Asylum and Immigration Judge and a Council of Europe expert on Open Justice.
  • Insurance and insurance-related investment products: independent member of the Executive Board of the Chartered Institute of Insurance and has been Independent Adjudicator for the Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority (QFCRA)’s Customer Dispute Resolution Scheme (CDRS) since 2013.
  • Judicial matters: he is a trained judicial trainer and judicial appraiser.
  • Media regulation, editorial and journalistic practice: he is a former journalist, a national tabloid media lawyer for over 40 years and published author in this area.
  • Telecommunications, particularly in the premium-rate telephony sector: a legal Chair of the Ofcom-appointed Phonepaid Services Authority’s Code Adjudication Panel, dealing with the regulation of premium rate phone-paid services in the UK.
